Shahrzad Arshadi 's Project Dengbêj (Singer)
Donation protected
Dengbej, the title to my documentary, is a Kurdish word for storyteller, singer or musician who walks from one village to another, from mountain to mountain, to sing and bring new stories to people.
The art of dengbej was started by women in Kurdistan. When a family member was killed or disappeared , and the pain of loss was too much to bear, women sang! This is how stories transferred from village to village and generation after generation.
Dengbej is the story of two young women from Kurdistan / Iran, their art and their courage to fight for freedom.
I am Shahrzad Arshadi, a Montréal-based award winning multidisciplinary artist, performer, feminist and social justice activist. I came to Canada as a political refugee on December 24, 1983 with my two months old son. I am also a core member of the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling (COHDS) at Concordia University.
