Hi my name is Justyna. I created this fundraiser to help Ewa’s family cover the memorial and funeral expenses.
My heart is truly breaking into a million pieces as a write this. The void that Ewa left in our hearts is irreplaceable. Ewa was unlike anyone I ever had the pleasure of knowing. Her heart of gold touched many walks of life. She always put the needs of others before her own.
Around 20 years old Ewa was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome which was managed outpatient. In November, 2019 she was told she would eventually need a bone marrow transplant, but for the time being things were stable. In January, 2020 after developing significant breathing issues she was diagnosed with an extremely rare disease- PAP- Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis. Due to the extensive and complex nature of her disease, she was referred for care to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC, where she learned that a bone marrow transplant was necessary ASAP because the PAP was progressing and affecting her lungs dramatically. She needed surgery but couldn’t have it without the bone marrow transplant. Covid complicated things more and almost made the only suitable donor’s match impossible to transport into the country. She eventually had her bone marrow transplant in August, 2020. She spent weeks in the ICU following the transplant. In October, 2020 she had to have an emergency lung surgery due to an extensive infection from the PAP. 20% of her lung was removed which then subsequently put her in a coma for over a month due to many complications. She fought no matter what. When she woke up from the coma, she was determined to fight with all she had in her. She eventually got discharged from the hospital and came home for Christmas, 2020 which was her dream come true- Christmas was her favorite holiday. She was so happy to spend it with her family who have been her backbone in this nightmare. She thanked God each and everyday for giving her the strength to keep on going. A year and a half later while still undergoing therapies, infusions, and following through with multiple doctors, she learned that her lung disease was progressing, and she was told she will need another lung surgery which she had January 4, 2023. The surgery success rate is 90%. She felt optimistic although scared beyond anyone’s imagination. Ewa was terrified of hospitals at this point, but with the help of her dearest sister Monika, who has been by her side day in and day out, for over 2 years she knew she could do it. The surgery led to multiple complications including significant bleeding and seizures. She developed pulmonary artery hypertension, which along with the PAP caused rupture of the pulmonary artery which resulted in an internal bleed. After fighting so hard for so long, Ewa passed away on February 7, 2023 to be with the angels.
While fighting, she never once lost faith, or the contagious and radiant smile from her face. She lit up every room she walked into. Her positive attitude on life was something I admired for as long as she was with us. Things we may take for granted she cherished. She always saw the light at the end of the tunnel no matter what. While suffering herself, she always took care of everyone around her including her dearest family. She looked after all their needs, big or small.
Ewa’s wish was to be laid to rest in Poland. Her family will be making arrangements and making that last wish come true.
Fly high our angel, and look after us earth-side. We love you forever.
