On September 1, 2018, our sweet boy was admitted to the Emergency Room. Initially, Ezra was diagnosed with pneumonia after doctors have thoroughly observed X-rays and found liquid in his left lung. As the days went by, our boy continued to get more ill and the doctors were not able to find a source as his symptoms were not related to his diagnosis. A CT Scan was performed and surgeons have concluded that there may be a twisting of the intestines. On September 3, 2018, Ezra was rushed into the operation room for emergency surgery and was later diagnosed with diaphragmatic hernia. This type of hernia is a congenital birth defect that is most commonly detected during a baby’s prenatal ultrasound - it is rarely diagnosed after the first week of being born. A diaphragmatic hernia develops as a fetus is forming in the mother's uterus. A congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) occurs when the diaphragm does not form properly. The diaphragm is a thin sheet of muscle that separates the abdomen from the chest. When there is an opening in the diaphragm, organs that are normally in the abdomen can be pushed (herniated) through the opening into the chest. In Ezra’s case, 80% of his small intestines were pulled up into the opening of his diaphragm and into his chest cavity. After showing no signs of being viable, surgeons have decided to remove 80% of Ezra’s small intestines causing long term health problems for our boy. Discussions have evolved of Ezra needing a feeding tube in order for him to receive the proper nutrients. Our estimated time in the hospital ranges between 4-6 weeks and we have created this GoFundMe to help with Ezra’s medical expenses. We ask for your support and prayers as we continue to push through this roller coaster ride.
