Ezra Alexander had to be taken to the emergency room at UnityPoint in Sioux City on Monday August 24th because he wouldn't eat all day and his crying sounded oddly rhythmic. He was life flighted to Omaha Children's Hospital, where they discovered a congenital heart defect: his mitral valve on the left side of his heart needed repaired or replaced, because it was regurgitating blood back into his atrium, which caused an enlarged heart and difficulty breathing.
Ezra went into open heart surgery early the morning of Wednesday August 26th. They couldn't repair his mitral valve using his own living tissue, so he was successfully given a replacement called a Melody valve. The Melody valve will need replaced every couple of years as Ezra continues to grow.
Today marks 11 days since Ezra has been in the hospital. In the best case scenario, the surgeon estimated a two week hospital stay if he could repair the valve. Since he ended up replacing it instead, we don't have a definite recovery timeline right now. We don't have a lot of answers for the long-term questions. In order to be closer to the hospital, the family has decided to relocate to Omaha as this will be a constant battle for Ezra. So along with hospital expenses, there are now moving expenses involved as well.
Even the smallest amount of help would be so greatly appreciated. If you're unable to contribute monetarily, please help us spread the word and send on your love and light. Ezra Alexander has captured the hearts of everyone he has come into contact with, so help us keep his heart beating too.
