As established by the World Health Organization, mental health is a “state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and can make a contribution to his or her community” (Hosman et al., 2004). In the United States, mental health affects 21% of the adult community, making it a wide-ranging problem in our local community and our country (Hosman et al., 2004).

Through the spread of help, exemplification, awareness, and learning resources, we aspire to positively reshape and relieve our local and national community of the burden of facing mental disorders and emphasize these individuals are not alone.

The H.E.A.L from Within, Honors in Action Project, attempts to raise awareness and educate with the purpose of promoting a better morrow. The initiative intends to fulfill these objectives through its four key issues: Help, Exemplify, Awareness, and Learning.

  • Help: How individuals suffering from mental disorders can seek help.
  • Exemplify: Types of mental illnesses and what they are.
  • Awareness: What is mental health?
  • Learning: Consequences of untreated mental disorders and prevention methods.

The Beta Kappa Iota Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa plans to utilize these critical matters as the pillars of the project. Through these pillars, various activities will be organized in order to inform the masses, offer guidance, and fundraising. These activities will further the extent of our impact in a community full of needs.

The H.E.A.L from Within initiative aims to address the needs of a society lacking the mechanisms to combat mental impairments. By unifying the project's principles, Help, Exemplify, Awareness, and Learning, we will encourage mindfulness, destigmatize mental illness, and offer inexpensive therapy. These preventative measures proven to be prosperous are the solution to assisting our local community and hopefully a call to action on a national scale.

Our executive board aspires to foster a sustainable culture cognizant of mental disorders and enthusiastic about formulating change. We anticipate forthcoming executive boards to sustain this project and advance the campaign against the hazardous consequences of untreated mental maladies. Our vision encourages collaboration within students, faculty, and Eduardo J. Padron organizations such as clubs, student life, and more; with this approach, the Beta Kappa Iota Chapter expects to encounter continued success for generations to come.
