Hello! My name is Alex Alfaro and I am a percussionist/drummer currently living in Springfield, Missouri. I am in the last semester of my undergradute study at Missouri State University working towards a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance.
I have been offered an absolutely amazing opportunity to study and perform as a Fellow at the Cortona Sessions for New Music this summer in Cortona, Italy as a special scholarship recipient. Due to the strength of my audition at the University of Kansas for graduate study in music I was immedietly offered this amazing opportunity and a $1,050 scholarship to attend The Sessions.
Here's a quick breakdown of my financial needs for this trip:
Original Tuition: $2,050
Scholarship: -$1,050
My Tuition: $1,000; which includes:
- 14 nights lodging at the Hotel Oasi Neumann (check-in June 25 / check-out July 9)
- Breakfast
- Round-trip train ticket to Florence for excursion
- All lessons, classes, lectures, concerts, and festival events
Estimated Travel Costs: ~$1,500
Tuition Balance Due: April 11
Plane Ticket: Will be purchased soon, exact fundraising goal will be updated after purchase.
Total Fundraising Goal: $2,500
Here's a short read from The Sessions website about the festival:
'One of the world's premiere educational programs dedicated to the creation and performance of contemporary music, the Cortona Sessions is a destination for emerging composers and performers seeking to collaborate, learn, grow, and create. The Sessions provide participants with an inspiring and supportive environment in which new music is explored in all its shapes, sizes, and colors. Overflowing with la dolce vita, the Cortona Sessions offers participants a life-changing two weeks under the Tuscan sun.'
On top of being able to make connections with composers and performers from around the world, work on and premier new works, and gain insight into the world of contemporary performance, I will have the opportunity to study one-on-one with marimba virtuoso Ji Hye Jung.
For me, this trip is an opportunity of a lifetime. As I leave my undergraduate study and venture into the world of graduate study, The Sessions will be a perfect jumping-off point for my goals and dreams of making a career in contemporary music performance.
Please consider helping me to make this trip happen and eaze the financial burden as I begin to plan my next step in my education and life. Any amount is helpful, and I so greatly appreciate you even taking the time to read my story and consider helping me!
Thanks, and much love,
Alex Alfaro
