Hello, we are a group of 8 visual culture students studying at AMFI (Amsterdam Fashion Institute), and we’re creating a thought-provoking short film titled “Eye to Eye”. This film is a psychological and visually-driven exploration of perfectionism, identity, and mental confinement in an age obsessed with curated images and constant observation. Think the substance, black swan meets black mirror.

What is this film about?

Eye to Eye is a 4–5 minute fashion horror film about perfection, control, and the invisible systems that shape our self-image. Set inside a hyper-stylized world that slowly unravels, the film follows Iris—a woman whose every move is watched, aestheticized, and approved by an external voice that turns out to be her own internalised programming. Through sterile beauty rituals, algorithmic demands, and a descent into techno-hell, she fights to break free—only to realize the system lives inside her.

This story speaks to the current zeitgeist: the pressure to curate ourselves online, the AI-driven loops of content and beauty trends, and the constant performance of “being seen.” In a time when identity is mediated through filters, feedback, and surveillance culture disguised as self-expression, Eye to Eye asks: what happens when the voice telling you to be perfect is your own?

We’re building a stylized, cinematic short—equal parts fashion film, psychological horror, and surreal media satire. WHY

As visual culture students, we’re constantly examining the impact of image, surveillance, and identity in modern society. “Eye to Eye” is our response to the pressures we see and feel in a world dominated by hyper-visibility, social media perfection, and internalized anxiety. This project is not just a film, it’s our way of starting a conversation about the mental cages we build around ourselves and the liberating power of breaking free.
