In April this year I'm flying to the US where I'll start my solo thru-hike from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail, camping along the entire trail.
The trail spans 2,650 miles (4,265 kilometers) from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon, and Washington. It reveals the beauty of the desert, unfolds the glaciated expanses of the Sierra Nevada, travels deep forests, and provides commanding landscapes of volcanic peaks in the Cascade Range. It'll take me approximately 5 1/2 to 6 months to complete.
I wanted to hike for a purpose and fundraise money for Eyes For East Africa, Kwale District Eye Centre - an eye clinic situated in the little town where I grew up in South East Kenya, East Africa, with the city of Mombasa to the north, and the Tanzanian border to the South.
It was founded in 1993 by UK trained ophthalmologist Dr Helen Roberts, whose family and children I have known my entire life. The aim of the centre is to provide affordable, accessible eye care to combat the totally unnecessary rate of blindness in a very poor rural area.
It is a charitable organisation and patients pay only an affordable contribution towards their care. No patients are refused treatment and donations are required, particularly to allow poor patients to undergo surgical procedures.
It would mean the world to me to promote and raise money for this amazing organisation that holds such a special place in my heart during my hike across America.
