After the Homestretch Arizona (ATHA), a nonprofit dedicated to giving retired racehorses a second chance, launches its Extreme Barn Makeover – Thoroughbred Edition campaign. The mission: build safe, permanent pens with shade structures at ATHA’s Desert Hills facility to shield horses from Arizona’s harsh climate.
Current pens are deteriorating—many are temporary and unstable. Shade is critically lacking, and a recent storm destroyed one of the few shade structures, nearly causing injury. These upgrades are essential for the horses’ safety and comfort year-round as they heal and prepare for their new forever homes.
The project will replace our existing setups with new cemented, shaded enclosures built to last for decades. ATHA aims to raise $100,000, and thanks to a generous pledge from an ATHA board member, any shortfall will be covered—ensuring that every dollar
donated goes directly to the horses, and your support will help determine how much of the goal we can achieve through community contributions.
“Every horse that comes to ATHA has a story—and a future worth fighting for,” said Michele Anderson, President of ATHA. “This makeover isn’t just about pens; it’s about hope. With your support, we can give these incredible athletes the safe haven they deserve.”
