Hi, we are Camron and Bridget, and it’s with heavy hearts that we share some devastating news: our beloved dog, Tank, has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a painful and aggressive bone cancer. It started as a limp in his front leg we assumed was arthritis, but when the lameness worsened, we took him to the vet for X-rays. That’s when we learned the heartbreaking truth that his bone is deteriorating from a tumor.

Bridget adopted Tank nearly ten years ago, and if you’ve ever met him, you know how special he is. He loves rolling in the grass, soaking up the sun, and taking slow walks so he can enjoy unlimited sniffs. He’s a gentle, loving soul who just wants to love and be loved.

Earlier this year, Tank had surgery to remove two masses, which turned out to be two different types of cancer. Thankfully, we caught both early enough that neither had spread, and the surgery was successful. We’re still paying off $6,000 in vet bills from that procedure, and now we’re facing the significant financial cost of treating his bone cancer. We’re not ready to let go of our otherwise healthy Tank.

Without treatment, Tank may only have two months to live. The standard approach to remove the tumor, relieve pain, and prevent a catastrophic bone fracture is amputation. After many tears and difficult conversations, we’ve made the decision to have his leg amputated to give him the best quality of life possible. Bone cancer is extremely painful, and removing the affected limb will remove the source of his pain.

Thankfully, Tank’s diagnostic tests show no sign of cancer spread to his lungs yet. That means amputation followed by chemotherapy could extend his average survival time to one year, and about 20% of dogs still enjoy a good quality of life two years after surgery.

We have already spent $1,500 on diagnostics, and we now need $10,000 ($6,000 for surgery + $4,000 for five doses of chemotherapy). We want to move forward quickly so the treatment is more effective at slowing microscopic spread. The pain will only get worse, and right now Tank is still strong and healthy enough to handle surgery and recover well.
