What is this book about?

Hardcore and punk rock has a long history in China, yet to most of the world it is completely unknown. During my time traveling around China I was introduced to the world of Chinese hardcore punk and forged friendships and connections that will last a lifetime. In this book I want to highlight the many bands that exist in China, as well as explore the scene that makes it great. I hope to include in this book a variety of photos, interviews and band recommendations, as well as some personal anecdote's and stories.

Why China? Why Hardcore & Punk?

Both China and Hardcore Punk hold a special place in my heart. My grandfather is from the Chinese city of Guangzhou and moved to the United States in his 20's. I spent a lot of time as a kid visiting him in his New York apartment where he would tell me stories about his life in China. When I was in middle school, I found out about hardcore punk through some older kids in my town. I instantly connected with the music and started attending live shows around the age of 13. But how do these things connect? It was always a dream of mine to travel to and explore the place where my Grandfather once called home and in 2023 I achieved this dream and traveled to China. While staying in Beijing I was introduced to the Chinese hardcore punk music scene by complete chance and was able to attend a live show. I was ecstatic. It felt like two important parts of my life coming together in a strange but exciting way. In 2024 I returned to China and attended more shows in the southern city of Guangzhou. It felt so special to explore the city my grandfather was born and raised in and also experience the ferocity and companionship of hardcore.
