What Do I Need?
Funds to cover living costs (off campus housing) and possibly tuition (I am waiting for word on scholarships for year 2 that will cover the bulk of tuition) for Indiana University Bloomington campus Egyptology MA for 2025-2026.
Current Expenses Per month
Total: around $1300
Phone: $100
Utilities (Energy and Internet) $160
Rent: at least $600
Food: $100
I am partly reliant on a GFM campaign because the bulk of full ride scholarships in Egyptology/Near Eastern Studies are for the PHD programs. If you want to see the type of work your dollars will be supporting, watch one or more of the videos below!
Why not just go for a PHD? (you may be asking).
Answer= I have gone through two cycles of applying to PHD programs but have not gotten in. Without an Egyptology/Near Eastern Studies MA, I am not competitive enough to get into any of these programs. Without your help, I am stuck in a catch 22. If you want to see examples of my potential and the work I have already done to advance myself in this field, check out my social media presence (Insta, Facebook, and YouTube)!
What about scholarships? (you may be asking).
Answer = I have an active list of scholarships I am applying to as well. Because I am a graduate student, the pool of available scholarships is already less.
How Did I Get Here?
My passion for Egyptology started as a young child. This passion continued throughout my college years. I received a Bachelor of Arts from Sweet Briar college where I majored in history and minored in archaeology. As an undergraduate in 2011, I began a program at the American University in Cairo. However, due to the “Arab Spring,” I transferred to College Year in Athens (CYA). In the course of my spring break at CYA and my last 10 days abroad, I returned to Egypt to explore relevant archaeological sites within Lower and Upper Egypt. I then went on to gain an MA from Tufts University in History and Museum Studies. Most of my knowledge about Ancient Egypt has been gained independently and covers Egypt's pre-history, pharaonic Period (Old Kingdom-New Kingdom), and the role of women in ancient Egypt. I have created and taught multiple 4 and 8 week courses on the history of ancient Egypt for the Osher Life-Long Learning Program. I have spent this past year or so refining a tentative dissertation topic which takes a comparative look at the place of elite women and female rulers within Pharaonic Egypt, the ancient Near East, and Tudor England. I try to spread knowledge of ancient Egypt through social media and part-time online Learning Sessions.
Overall Goals
Post MA/PhD = a full-time position encompassing the following: a museum curatorial role focusing on objects from pharaonic Egypt, research on gender dynamics in ANE, and working with/educating the public about ancient Egypt via material culture remains.
