HELP US EXPAND THE SARVIS CREEK WILDERNESS AREA
In the 1970’s a group of activists worked to create Wilderness areas in Routt County. The Sarvis Creek Wilderness Area was designated in 1993. The original proposal for the Sarvis Creek Wilderness Area included Harrison Creek and the Green Creek part of the watershed for Pleasant Valley.
In the 1970’s Routt County citizens came together to oppose the Lake Catamount Ski Area in Pleasant Valley. The ski area was rejected by the US Forest Service in 1998. Due to these citizen efforts, Routt County understood the importance of the protection and management of the lands in Pleasant Valley. Routt County’s Sarvis Creek Area Plan was approved in 1996 to protect the remaining open lands adjacent to historic Pleasant Valley and buffer the Sarvis Creek Wilderness Area from development.
The Trappers Lake Sierra Club is working to expand the current Sarvis Creek Wilderness Area to include Harrison Creek and Green Creek areas that were removed from the original wilderness proposal due to the planned Lake Catamount Ski Area. This effort will ensure the protection of Pleasant Valley and the Sarvis Creek Area for future generations.
There are many steps before Wilderness designation and your support will help defray the following costs:
-A survey documenting species of concern
-A Social media campaign including a website
-A statewide and national campaign for public and elected official support
-Organization and management of this important effort
