Our nicu journey
All money raised will got to the nicu team at the rosie hospital at
addenbrooke's for all there amazing work
My name is Kieran and most of you will have already seen my partner Naomi's daily updates and story on her personal Facebook in regards to our son's complications/ NICU journey. Many people suggested a go fund me a while ago however Naomi and myself are quite stubborn and would never ask for help in that sense, so we continued to deal with it privately and face the impacts. Unfortunately it has taken its toll and with this being our first experience with a child in NICU we did not know what to expect and all the expenses involved with daily travel, stopping work, adapting life around our other children. We had families approach or share Thier stories on why a go fund helped their families so much that we should strongly consider a friend set one up.. however upon discussion between myself and Naomi we decided it would be better do it ourselves as we would want to write our own story and share updates .. so here is our story for those who do not know
During our pregnancy later on. Naomi always stated that this pregnancy felt different and expressed that to the midwives, she also stated that she never felt any movements which finally towards the end we got some monitoring so was going eyes and ears of that for any form of reassurance however something still didn't feel right with Naomi.. we didn't have many appointments at first with Naomi, it was all a little quiet. Just a check up here and there. Untill our 28th week scan were they stated they found a dialation in babies bowel, referring us to the Rosie hospital fetal medicine in Cambridge who see us within a week confirming the dialation. Within 3 weeks of that back and forth between hospitals, we went back for our second appointment with Rosie hospital and upon scanning. Drastic changes were seen. There were now 4 dialations causing a large obstruction with a few other complications. At this point we didn't have much to go off apart from ideas of what it could be etc with the explanation that we won't fully know until baby is out of the womb. We had things like internal bleeds, chromosome issues, internal development problems, possible hirschsrungs disease along with many other possibilities. Some of his measurements like his femer was measuring smaller with his abdomen swelling out to the 99th percentile..
We was told to hold on, have monitoring and to go back for a plan / another scan on 21st December. However plans changed when baby wanted to make an early entrance.. we called up Cambridge antinatel clinic and explained Naomi felt off and had not had monitoring for movements in a while so they booked her in to be checked over. They said everything was fine sending us home. This was Wednesday 11th December. We were around our 34th week in the pregnancy. The next morning Naomi went to the toilet to find blood clots so we quickly rushed back to the hospital and admitted, her body was also contracting but not consistent. I remained with Naomi but we arranged child care with a family friend. The days following were horrendous as she was bleeding a concerning amount but told all was ok even with the concerns, her body slowly dilated over the course of the weekend sending us back and forth to delivery were steroid injections for babies lungs were given. Soon after this progression stopped late Saturday were we was sent back to the ward .. nothing on the Sunday just more bleeding however on the Monday morning everything started up and progressed through the Day. Naomi raised this with the nurses on the ward who monitored her contractions which were still not consistent but Naomi explained that sometimes that's how her body works but labour is still progressing. In the end we requested and internal to find she was now 7cm dilated and off we went back to labour ward .. fast forward. Our son was born into the early hours on Tuesday 17th December 34+5 days gestation where he was taken straight to nicu and myself followed but Naomi had to remain put to receive checks etc.
They almost instantly carried out scans/x-rays on baby to see internally for his operation that was carried out the next morning. They came and explained the complaints and procedure so is both together, explaining loss of life, complications and infections etc.
The next day. He was taken down for his operation first thing in the morning which was the longest 4 hours of our life'
. We are grateful for the aid in setting this up and knowing that sometimes asking for help isn't such a bad thing..
Thankyou
