Cancer Sucks!

Donation protected
Lucie Downey Lightsey is a mother, friend, and fierce seeker of all things that inspire others to enjoy life to the fullest. From writing poetry to medical transcriptions, she has seen the beauty in a moonlit sky and felt how fleeting life can be working in the medical field. Lucie is always the one you see smiling or jesting a quip to make you laugh out loud. She has inspired many of us lucky to call her friend. No one said life was an easy road, but I’m sure everyone reading this can relate to the request for help in times of need. It seems that the ones who are the most giving and charitable usually get the short end of the stick. Lucie fits that to a “T”. As another great poet said, “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.” (Leonard Cohen) Please help us expose this crack of need and bring some light to someone who is in desperate need of your illuminating donation.

No one can predict the path their lives will take and no one is fully prepared for the experience that comes when they hear the dreaded word cancer. Not the first time, not the second time, not the third time, not ever. Those that think they are prepared will sooner or later be harshly proven wrong, as I was. You see, this isn’t my first rodeo with the C-word. My mother’s side of the family has a horrible batting average with this word. (7/10 siblings so far) So I should have been prepared to hear it again, right? WRONG! You’ve never heard the word until you’ve heard it come out of your best friend's mouth. “I’ve got cancer, and it doesn’t look good.”

You see, she’s not only my best friend in the world, she’s the mother of my 13-year-old step son. Yes, you read that correctly, she is my husband’s ex-wife. We have a very unique relationship. In fact, she’s more like a sister to me than anything. We celebrate holidays, birthdays, and even football together. I see a lot of my late mother somehow in her mother. And I don’t expect everyone to understand, I don’t even understand. But I am thankful. Without a doubt I know 100% she would be there for me if I needed her and 100%, I will do anything in my power to help her.

Lucie has been diagnosed with Stage 3 Signet Cell Adenocarcinoma of the stomach. She is literally in for the fight of her life, or Marvel End-Game as she referred to it when she first found out. The good news is there is hope and she is strong with her faith. Of course, no one can tell us the treatment will work 100%. But, as the famous quote goes, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” (Martin Luther King, Jr.) Currently the plan of action is Chemotherapy for approx. 3 months followed by removing most of her stomach then approx. 3 more months of Chemotherapy. In between, she will have various diagnostic test to track the progress of treatment. All of her treatments are in Mobile, Alabama. One and a half hours away. She is currently on short term disability with her work but that will run out soon. Medical bills have already started piling up with no end in sight. Please donate if you can, if you can’t at least share, but above all… pray.
