Raising money for cancer rehab and UHB NHS Staff

Donation protected
Hi Everyone,

The physiotherapy and pharmacy team at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine are taking on a big challenge this spring to raise money for 2 incredible charities - Pinc and Steel and UHB's NHS Superheroes Fund. We're aiming to run the length of the Jurassic Coast path (95 miles!) as a relay over 24 hours. Since deciding to do this, we have discovered it's quite a hilly chunk of coast path - but we're determined to complete it!

Here's a bit about why we've chosen these charities...

The Louise Obern Scholarship at Pinc and Steel.

Pinc and Steel is a charity dedicated to improving rehabilitation provision for cancer patients across the UK by increasing the expertise of therapy staff to through access to specialist training and by delivering specialist rehab. Rehabilitation during and following cancer research is known to improve quality of life and function but it isn't always well funded. The Louise Obern Scholarship will pay for a therapist to attend the specialist course offered by Pinc and Steel, with the potential to have huge impact on the lives of those affected by cancer. Louise was a close friend of one of our team members, she was an incredible cancer physiotherapist, who was passionate and incredibly committed to increasing access to rehabilitation following a cancer diagnosis. Sadly and inexplicably Louise died from a sudden recurrence of Breast Cancer in March 2021, leaving behind a young family and a career with so much potential to have a positive impact on the lives of those affected by cancer. Were Louise here, this challenge would have been met with a raised eyebrow - she would think we were all completely mad!

The sacrifice made by NHS staff over the last 2 years has been huge and we are and have been constantly amazed and inspired by the compassion and commitment of our colleagues here at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. The last few years have presented the QE with enormous and seemingly unsurmountable challenges and each time staff have risen to them. We want to raise some money to help make the working environment better for our colleagues and friends.
