Darryl Wickham is a 37 year old man from Liverpool living on his own in London. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when he was just 25 yrs old and unfortunately for him and his family it has been an aggressively progressive form of MS. This has meant that Darryl has gone from being a fiercely independent character who loves to engage and socialise to being quadriplegic, bed bound and unable to eat or speak. He relies on carers coming in regularly for all of his daily needs from personal care to scratching his nose however the place where Darryl spends almost all of his life is his bed. The bed he currently has is highly unsuitable for his needs. It puts him at an increased risk of pressure sores which have already begun to develop, which at this point in Darryl's life will cause serious and irreversible damage. Darryl has leg spasms which cause his legs to twist and recoil often falling off the edge of the bed. He is unable to greet any visitors in a dignified manner having them hover over him in bed. I have found a company called Theraposture who work with the MS society and Occupational Therapists to provide bespoke beds for people in Darryl's position, which if Darryl could afford would eliminate all of the above problems, I have received a quote for a suitable Bed frame and mattress with flex rotation to allow Darryl to spend the time he has left being comfortable, safe and dignified. it will importantly also allow the carers to work in a safe way as they currently risk their backs daily with manual handling not advised, but with no other option. The quote was for £11,000. This is why we are asking if anyone can kindly donate any amount possible, so we can purchase the bed to help improve his current quality of life and change Darryl's daily suffering into one he can enjoy better with his loved ones.
