Meet Oliver. Ollie came into our lives almost six months ago when he ran in front of our car as a feral kitten in the country. He was very sick. After five months of medicines, vet appointments and multiple surgery procedures/scopes we finally found a vet who could help him. They removed a huge polyp from the back of his throat/nasal cavity. For the first time in this baby’s life, he could breath through his nose and the mucus and sinus congestion was gone. Unfortunately that was only the beginning of this little guy’s journey.
This week my finally healthy, super sweet and cuddly kitten was attacked by our dog. He incurred some puncture wounds to his face which turned into major swelling in his head and a bottom jaw that he could not move. He could not eat and could not close his mouth. After being referred twice we ended up at an Emergency 24 care animal hospital in Indianapolis. We were told based on an x-ray that his jaw was broken and our options were either surgery our euthanasia. We opted for surgery. Thank God we did, because the next day we actually got to talk to a surgeon who ordered a CT scan because he believed the radiograph actually showed a growth plate and not a fracture. He was right! After hospitalization and meds, the swelling is receding, his jaw has realigned and he is eating and using his mouth again.
We are beyond grateful that this is the outcome of this very emotional journey. And we understand that many people would never go to these extremes for an animal. But if you do understand and have ever done whatever needs done to help another living creature, you probably know that these decisions do come with a very expensive price tag.
We have managed most of the previous costs due to the initial polyp. But this week’s hospitalization, ER vet and surgeon costs and the CT scan itself has put us in a place that we need help. We pray that your generosity will continue to allow us to give Oliver the chance at a long and healthy life, one that makes his first eight months in this world a forgotten past.
