Evie's Broken Leg Orthopedic Care
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Alex. My beautiful borzoi Evie broke her leg Thursday night [1/19/23].
What we know: Evie was playing at the park the other day with her doggie friend. In a freak accident the dogs collided and Evie broke her leg. It is a bad break in a bad location; An open oblique fracture of both radius and ulna just above her left wrist. As soon as it happened I ran straight to her and put pressure on her open wound to slow the bleeding. It was shocking. As we carried her to the car, Dr Zach our local vet answered his cell and was able to meet us at the clinic just down the road, after hours. He did the best he could, but ended up referring me to an orthopedic surgeon. Her bones broke too close to her wrist, so he was not able to fix her leg, just immobilize it until we can get her to the specialist. Zach lined up her leg as best as he could, cleaned and stapled her skin closed, and put her in a temporary cast for the weekend. She is on pain meds and antibiotics for now.
What is next: We have an appointment for Evie to see an orthopedic surgeon on Monday. She will go into her second surgery Monday or Tuesday. I spent all day Friday calling every clinic and ortho vet in El Paso, trying to see who could repair the leg. El Paso is our closest option and the ortho specialist there is 4 hours away. Dr Zach referred me to Austin instead. 7 hours away. The specialist there has availability to get her in Monday and they were several thousand cheaper than the specialist in ElPaso.
Even still, I need to walk into the surgeon's office Monday morning and pay in full, up front. Her bill is quoted at $5000. There will also be travel, minimum 3 days away from home, and aftercare to think about.
So, I have decided to start this go fund me. It makes me sick to ask for money from anyone, but I thought to at least make this option available. If anyone were in a place to spare a little, it wouldn't go unappreciated. And I am one to pay it forward where I can.
I am putting my ego aside in starting this go fund me. Evie means the world to me. It is hard to say that I am not in the financial situation that I'd like to be in. Life happens. I am currently in a place where I live paycheck to paycheck and no longer have the luxury of investing in pet insurance, or having $5K set aside for an emergency like this.
To my amazing support system of family and friends who have reached out to help in so many ways these past few days, I am forever thankful.
