Dear Brooklyn Community,
I am creating a Go Fund Me for my friend Sam who is a single mother raising 4 children (15,13, 6, 1 year old). Two of her children were happy students at ps58 and now dedicated middle and high schoolers at New Voices and Bard Manhattan.
Sam has been working as a TSA security agent at JFK airport for years. She works mostly at night in order to take care of her children during the day (morning rushes, school drop offs and pick ups, dinner preps and bed time routine). Pandemic was very hard on the family because she had to keep working while kids went through remote school and isolation. Since the beginning of the pandemic, her landlords have tried to evict her and used the worst tactics. She has been living more than a year without gas to cook. She now has to vacate the rental before mid February.
In order to not put herself in a similar situation, exploited by greedy landlords, she has combined all her efforts and savings into buying a small cottage in the Rockaways. Now that her loan has been approved and she has secured a down paiement, she is missing 5000 of the 20k closing costs, due mostly to the yearly flood insurance required for the Rockaways.
Becoming a house owner would end years of feeling discriminated during house huntings and fears of being displaced again. On top of it, this cottage has an adjacent 1 bedroom apartment that she could rent to generate income and facilitate the mortgage payments and monthly bills.
I took the initiative of creating a go fund me because I have witnessed her courage for years and I really think that she desserves a fresh new start and a place to call home for her children.
With the help of $5000 she could be closing on the house in the next two weeks and make sure her children have a roof over their heads this winter.
