Evey Fleck is a goofball 1-year-old who loves snacks, snuggles, and her brother Matthew (oh and of course Elmo - how could we forget him). A few weeks ago, after her 1st birthday, she wasn't feeling well. Mom and dad brought her to the doctor several times, but after 3 weeks of antibiotics and waiting she was still feeling lethargic, loopy, and listless. Not even feeling up to crawling or walking. She was given an MRI at Saint Mary's in Reno where the doctor's found a mass at the base of her little spine.

Evey and her mom, Victoria, were medevaced to Children's Hospital in Oakland, California. While her daddy, Jon, and Grandmommy, Lisa, drove to the bay area to meet them. Upon arriving the doctors immediately started testing and doing what they could to make Evey more comfortable.

At this time, the doctors believe the mass to be a neuroblastoma . She is having surgery to remove as much of the mass as possible without getting too close to her spine. The remainder of the mass will likely be handled with chemotherapy and/or radiation.

Doctors are hopeful for a few reasons:
- the tumor is not ON her spine
- they think she might have a childhood cancer with a high survival rate
- she's not showing any indication of loss of mobility or feeling

More information will come after the mass has been biopsied but if you know this family you know it is not their first cancer journey. Jon, Evey's dad, had childhood leukemia when he was 17, which he has since conquered. In fact, he was treated at the exact same hospital (and even by the same doctors) where Evey is now being cared for.

We've been told most of the treatment will be able to take place in Reno but the induction treatment over the next few weeks or even months will be in Oakland. Not to mention the frequent trips back over the pass to meet with doctors.

Because it's not our first rodeo we are keenly aware of the peripheral costs associated with a healing journey like this. Medical bills aside there are insurance deductibles, lost wages, hotels, food, gas, baby sitters for siblings etc.

That's where you come in. Our family is rich in love and support from close and extended family but it is new and it's little. You can not financially prepare for a challenge like this and your help will mean the world to our family.

Evey has a long road ahead but she is strong and surrounded by love. We will need the most support now and over the next few weeks during the "induction" period if you are able to give. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
