I am a first generation college student who comes from an African American family of eight members (Mother, father, five sisters, and I). To the best of my knowledge, no one in my extended family is a professor or doctor so one may be pondering the question of why I aspire to such a vocation. Ever since I was young, I’ve always had this great aspiration within me to dramatically change the world for the better, through my life experiences, I’ve discovered that science is the best way for me to achieve that.
I am striving to become an MD/PhD who specializes in internal medicine and the field of epigenetics. My journey up to this point has been long and arduous. I would not do it justice trying to sum it up in a couple of sentences. Please see the video above and article links below to get a clear representation of where I’ve been and where I’m heading. Due to being a poor college kid living off of scholarships, school loans, and intermitent for the past five years, I am not in a good financial position to make the move, which is crucial to moving my life one-thousand steps forward. Please help me make this launch into the next big phase of my life. I promise to pay it forward by being a doctor and scientist with the upmost drive and integrity that acts as a positive catalyst for major change in the world.
Here is itemized breakdown of the expenses for the move:
Budget Rental Truck
approx. $1000.00
Gas
Cedar City Utah to Birmingham, AL is approx. 1789mi
Budget truck gets about 10mi per gallon
National Average of unleaded gas = $2.763 per gallon
1789mi/10mi per gallon= 178.9
178.9 required gallons of gasoline X $2.763 per gallon = approx. $500.00
Establishing a place of residence in Birmingham, AL
Deposit, Rent (First and Last), and Application Fee around $2250.00 (to be safe and this is assuming an apartment for up to $800.00 per month)
Groceries and bills for the month of June
Groceries =$700.00
Bills = $550.00
Feasible mode of transportation
Purchase of a reliable car (I've been riding a bike around Cedar City, UT for the past 2 years, and although it's a great form of exercise, I'll need something a little more efficient in the bigger city of Birmingham, AL) = $5000.00
Total Monetary Necessity
$1000.00 + $500.00 + $2250.00 + $700.00 + $550.00 + $5000.00 = $10,000.00
