Our story is about Marissa. Marissa is a first generation college student who has faced life altering challenges, including her parents being incarcerated multiple times. Marissa has a great GPA and is doing well at CSUMB. Her goal is to be an elementary teacher in MPUSD. This year, Marissa almost gave up on attending CSUMB because her financial aid was significantly reduced. Marissa rallied and is now working 38 hours a week at Target while carrying a full load at school.
Here's where WE can provide tangible help. Marissa needs a car to get back and forth from her job at Target. She works long shifts and leaves work late at night and is currently walking back to her campus alone. (http://www.kion546.com/news/csumb-investigating-two-rape-cases/632725806)
Additionally, it is Marissa's goal to work in our local elementary schools, where having her own transportation will be critical.
We have found a car for Marissa. A private owner from the bay area will sell us a used car for 4800.00 out the door (tax, license, reg included). https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=469469645&makeCode1=SMART&modelCode1=FORTWO.
We are protecting Marissa's identity by not publishing her picture and we want to respect her family's privacy as it pertains to their story of struggle.
It is not Marissa who is asking for this. Carol and I have long sought a substantive way to support our local college students, especially those who face insurmountable hardship.
The graduation rate at CSUMB is currently 41%. We want students like Marissa to make it! Every Student, Every Day!
