Meet Edison Sanford Avis!
Edison joined us on May 31, 2015. Due to some unexpected complications during birth, his first few weeks of life have been a distressing whirlwind.
Because he was not receiving enough oxygen through the umbilical cord, Edison’s mom Kathy underwent an unexpected c-section and Edison took an emergency plane flight from Truckee to UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento. At UC Davis, Edison endured a 4-day cooling and heating procedure to help protect against potential damage to his brain. And if that wasn't enough, Edison underwent an intensive surgery at 5 days old– and will have two more surgeries in the upcoming months – to correct some issues with his digestive system.
Thankfully Edison is now on the mend. His first surgery was successful and the outlook for Edison’s long-term development is very positive
After two long, heart-wrenching weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), this is truly great news for Edison, his parents Kathy and Bob, and all those who love them.
Amongst the positive outlook for Edison’s future, his emergency birth, Kathy's c-section, Edison's emergency flight to UC Davis Medical Center, his intensive surgery, two weeks in the NICU, additional surgical procedures, and follow-up monitoring of his development in the months ahead are all resulting in significant medical costs for Bob and Kathy. Even with medical insurance helping some, the out-of-pocket expenses will be extremely expensive.
This is why Edison’s friends and family are coming together to help the Avis family put a major dent in those medical bills.
