Everyone deserves an opportunity to a quality education!

Hi, my name is Naomi and I am fundraising for my school in Kampala, Uganda.

In the UK, at times we can underestimate the power of education and the tools it’s gives us to develop in life. The culture and society we live in and the resources we have here are due to the education we’ve received. We can live here in safety and good health, and have fun rather than fighting for survival.

In the developing world, education isn’t at their finger tips as it is for us, this hinders a nations development and its ability to depend on themselves to provide a sustainable society.

I’ve been working in Uganda now for over 23 years and have a very good understanding of the culture and nation as a whole. After working in slum areas, I started my school to give a local community the opportunity to gain a skill based education. To enable children the opportunity to get out of the poverty cycles so many are stuck in.

Take for example, Jimmy (fiction name) - a young boy who lost his father and mother to alcohol and HIV, born in a very poor slum area, exposed to extreme poverty, who saw his brother murdered. Jimmy came to my school on a full bursary. Giving him this opportunity, Jimmy’s life is changed, he has been able to get out of the poverty cycle he was destined to live in.

Jimmy today, isn’t in this poverty trap. He is currently doing a diploma in the film industry and works part-time for a company where he shows responsibility, initiative, problem solving, analytical thinking and understands cause and effect.

Eddie (fiction name) - Eddie’s father and mother were both alcoholics and both died from abusive substances. Most of Eddie’s brothers have also died from substance abuse and criminal activity. Through helping Eddie, and giving him opportunities, he now currently runs his own business in metal and construction work. He’s building small houses and is independently developing himself. The poverty cycle was broken for him through the opportunities we provided for him.

This is just a couple of stories out of many through the work I’ve set up.

Through COVID, my school has gone through some very difficult circumstances and really needs a helping hand.

We want to be able to offer a large majority of our school places as bursaries and really change lives we are working with through our education.

In raising funds through your generous contributions, we will be able to cover a lot of the costs we incurred through COVID where we still had to pay our termly expenses when schools were online and didn’t have the income to sustain the running costs.

We will also finish developing the school grounds, by putting in good sports facilities, a playground and new classes. We moved our school to a new premises through the impact of COVID and haven’t been able to develop it due to minimal funds.

My school is a self supporting project as we do offer places to full paying students, however we need a little support just now as the economy around us is really struggling and we need a boost to get back to the point of sustainability.
