Every life matters - fighting COVID in Zimbabwe

Donation protected
“EVERY LIFE MATTERS”Please help us raise £25,000 to 1. help build an extension to and part renovate Mutare City Hospital (in Zimbabwe) and 2. purchase essential drugs and basic equipment to help in the fight against COVID 19.

The COVID 19 pandemic has put an enormous strain on health and social care services and economies globally- even countries traditionally regarded as having solid reserves are struggling to cope. This has led to an unusual degree of ‘inward focus’ as countries that have previously readily helped poorer nations feel overwhelmed themselves:  there is currently minimal attention being paid to the potential impact of the COVID 19 crisis on poorer nations at a global level. Add to that misinformation fuelled by incorrect assumptions such as the virus likely not thriving in hot climates (Iran and Florida say otherwise) or Africa’s relatively young population potentially doing better better in fighting Covid compared to Europe’s older population and the conditions are set for very poor outcomes.

Most people in Africa are living in poverty, even without corona,  with no access to functioning health systems, lacking basic health equipment and supplies such as gloves, oxygen (let alone ventilators), basic antibiotics and intravenous fluid supplies needed to help fight off co-infections associated with the virus. Even being young in Africa is not necessarily protective given potential additional health issues such as malnutrition and poor immunity from conditions such as HIV. Sub-Saharan Africa may be a few weeks behind Europe in terms of peak rates of infection but it is heading into winter. There is a desperate need to help this vulnerable population.

Please donate and help us raise £25,000 to help with a specific project to renovate and extend Mutare City General Hospital to complete an Infectious Disease Unit to house and isolate patients with COVID 19. In addition, the funds will also be used to purchase essential supplies such as gloves and PPE for the healthcare workers (nurses and doctors) and also aid in putting in a much required piped oxygen supply system for patients and increase the stock of  basic essentials such as  antibiotics and intravenous fluid  supplies to help fight co-infections and give patients without ready access to advanced care such as  proper Intensive Care Units/Ventilators at least a fighting chance to survive this serious illness.

We are a group of healthcare and other professionals canvassing for financial support to help our colleagues back home in the fight against this serious infection.

The committee consists of Dr George Mabeza, Dr Elisha Mvundura, Dr Victor Moyo, Prof Tawanda Gumbo, Dr Abysinia Sibanda all currently practicing doctors and Mr Joseph Muchina. We are working directly with our colleague Dr Anthony Mutara, Director of Health Services for Mutare City, who is our key contact person on the ground in Mutare - we are keen to  ensure that all funds donated will be used for direct help and not administrative purposes. We envision this project expanding to include other centres in Zimbabwe and possibly supporting Zimbabwean doctors currently working in other countries offering help in person if the situation allows in the future.  Please donate generously.
