Every Girl is Important Project

Boarding High School for Girls in KenyaFundraising Project

The academic system in the East African country of Kenya is, unfortunately, one that can not offer equal access to education to all of its students. We are seeking to build a boarding high school in Western Kenya to create an opportunity for Kenyan girls to grow cognitively, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In the last couple of months, we have made significant progress and have already acquired the land on which to build the high school for girls along with architectural plans. But despite these advancements, we still need your help to realize this project.

There are many young adolescent girls who do not have an opportunity to pursue a high school education. These girls we seek to serve are born into poverty in villages surrounding Eldoret, Kenya, a town near the border with Uganda. Many of the girls who will attend the school lives in villages located a long distance from Eldoret, the site of the high school. For this reason, we would like the girls to live on school grounds. The girls are willing to make valuable contributions to society and should have the opportunity to spend their youth as high school students. The nuns and the girls’ families cannot afford to build the school and thus they need your help. They need a school in which they can gain the knowledge and dispositions needed to build a thriving community. These girls will receive an education delivered by professional educators in the Sisters of Assumption congregation.

People interested in this project have asked how they can participate and help, as well as how they can visit Kenya and meet the young girls. So we have set up an Every Girl is Important School Project Go Fund Me page to help build the boarding school and for the girls to achieve their dream of continuing their studies to complete high school and go on to college. All donations go directly toward building the school.

Plan (Structure)

Construction is estimated to begin as soon as we reach our target goal and be completed within four months. The architect is working pro bono to ensure that the school is finished on the estimated timeline. Below is the architect’s plan:

People and Country

Located in East Africa, the country of Kenya is home to over 45,000,000 people.

Despite progress, millions are still denied the chance to go to school .

· One million children are still out of school in Kenya. While this is almost half the number in 1999, it is still the ninth highest of any country in the world.

· Primary education is not of sufficient quality to ensure that all children can learn the basics. Among young men aged 15-29 years who had left school after six years of schooling, 6% were illiterate and 26% were semi-literate. The figures are even worse for young women, with 9% illiterate and 30% semi-literate after being in school for six years.

· The proportion of semi-literate or illiterate women after six years of schooling has worsened in recent years: in 2003, 24% were in this situation, compared with 39% in 2008.

Progress in education is not reaching the marginalized.

The poor, and girls most of all, have far less chance of making it to school. In 2008, in Nairobi, almost all children from rich households had been to school, whether boy or girl. But 55% of poor girls living in the North-East had never been to school, with 43% of poor boys in the region in the same situation. This is, however, an improvement since 2003, when 71% of poor girls and 56% of poor boys in the North-East had never been to school.
