Evelynn Ward’s Fight Against Cerebral Palsy

Donation protected

In October 2019, my boyfriend and I eagerly welcomed our beautiful daughter Evelynn Rose into the world. The first five months of Evelynn’s life were filled with all the normal, adorable baby milestones every parent can’t wait to experience. At some point during Evelynn’s fifth month of life, she began to attempt to sit up, or so we thought. After a couple weeks of these “attempts”, we realized these movements were rhythmic in nature. We immediately took our girl to the ER, where we were told Evelynn had suffered brain damage most likely due to a stroke during my third trimester. This brain damage led to Evelynn receiving a diagnosis of quadriplegic cerebral palsy (CP). CP is a lifelong neurological disorder that mainly effects Evelynn’s ability to initiate and coordinate movement but can also affect every other aspect of Evelynn’s development. In addition, this damage has also caused a rare and devastating seizure disorder known as infantile spasms. Infantile spasms also cause gross delays in a child’s development causing lifelong disability in an array of areas. If you'd like to watch as Evelynn achieves her inchstones, please follow us at : https://www.instagram.com/cp_princesswarrior/

The severity of Evelynn’s cerebral palsy and the degree to which Evelynn’s seizure activity will impact her life will only be revealed with time. In terms of treatment, Evelynn is struggling to gain seizure control with the use of Sabril. We will be starting a ketogenic diet in the hopes that we can achieve freedom from the spasms. The recommended course of treatment for cerebral palsy is as much physical, occupational and speech therapy as possible. Evelynn is currently undergoing state funded therapies for all aspects of her development, but as we all know, insurance only covers the bare minimum which will not be enough to help Evelynn learn to sit, roll, walk and talk.

We are fundraising in the hopes of being able to give Evelynn the amazing opportunity to attend an intensive three-week physical and occupational therapy program in Boston before I go back to nursing school. Repetition is key for brain injured children to develop the ability to move independently. During this program, Evelynn will participate in multiple hours of therapy a day giving her that chance to develop new movement patterns! This will give her the ability to make great strides in reaching her developmental milestones and becoming as independent as possible. In addition, our goal is to raise enough funds to be able to stay near the therapy center which is 3 hours away from our home in New York.

We greatly appreciate any monetary contribution, social media share or words of love and encouragement anybody is willing to graciously bestow upon our family. Every little bit will help our CP warrior Evelynn reach her goal of independent living!!
