When our daughter, Evelyn, was 13 months old, she was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer called neuroblastoma. It attacks the adrenal glands and spreads throughout the bone marrow. Evelyn was diagnosed as intermediate to high risk, which meant immediate and intensive treatment.
Two years later, after multiple rounds of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, stem cell therapy, and isolation, she has kicked its butt and her scans have moved from every three months to every six months, which is a huge victory. Although we nearly lost Evelyn multiple times, we feel blessed and lucky as a family to have made it through so many obstacles and challenges.
Evelyn is currently healthy and happy for having survived such a traumatic start to life. However, because her stem cell treatment wasn't standard protocol at the time, it came with many financial responsibilities. Although our family is through the most difficult part of treatment physically and emotionally, we are struggling to pay leftover bills and collection agencies. We currently have multiple bills from multiple hospitals and clinics awaiting payment. The stress that this adds to our family is noticeable and we haven't been able to work our way out of it. Both my husband and I are teachers. Any funds raised through this campaign will go toward paying medical and overdue bills accumulated during her time of treatment.
