Evelyn could always find the courage to smile and provide solace for others in their life struggles. Her home was often the catalyst for community, and no hungry mouth would be turned away from her sensational, old-world Puerto Rican cooking. While Evelyn’s brutal honesty and thorny opinions could hurt, even homeless strangers could count on her kindness. Evelyn was known to randomly deliver plates of warm food and prayers to strangers in need, and cat call to pedestrians she thought needed a boost in self-esteem. Evelyn pushed her children to participate in church communities. Evelyn would go without her necessities in favor of affording the perfect day at the perfect beach for her children. She took great pride in the successes of her children, while quietly resenting that she had not done more for them. Evelyn may have taken for granted that she had instilled a great capacity for kindness in her children, a resilience they would need to face the colossal challenges of their own lives, and the selflessness to affect positive change in the lives around them. Evelyn would not want anyone to cry for her, but to smile and laugh as she did in the hardest of times, to celebrate the relationships we treasure most, and to sing at the top of our lungs in the middle of traffic.Evelyn was the light to many people, especially her grandbabies, who she love dearly.
