The Ohio State Evans Scholars are starting a new annual philanthropy event this year! The event will consist of a Knockerball soccer tournament with the majority of our proceeds going towards Mental Health America of Franklin County and the rest going towards the Stephanie Hummer Foundation. Mental Health America is a local nonprofit that raises awareness and offers free mental health services to residents of our local Columbus community. We will be having a representative from Mental Health America at our event to talk about their organization and the importance of mental health in our society and how mental health problems are becoming more prevalent among college students. The Stephanie Hummer Foundation is a nonprofit that was recently created in memory of Stephanie Hummer, who was an Ohio State Evans Scholar who was kidnapped just off campus and murdered in 1994. The Stephanie Hummer Foundation raises funds to support off-campus safety at Ohio State.
As far as the tournament goes, we will be having 16 teams of 3 competeing on two adjacent fields at Lincoln Tower Park on Sunday, April 2nd from 1PM-4PM. The cost to sign up a team is $45 and each team is guarenteed to play a minimum of two games. Each team will also have one or two Evans Scholars act as their team coach. A silent auction and lawn games will also be available at the event for teams waiting their turn to play. The silent auction will feature items from popular Columbus organizations such as the Columbus Crew, the Columbus Zoo, Raising Canes, and Gateway Film Center.
