I have been asked to set up a gofundme account because many of you want to make a donation because you cannot make the fundraiser. SO here it is with his story.
Evan is a 15 year old boy who was born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. Spina Bifida is a birth defect that affects 1 in 1,000 babies born. Evan’s spinal cord was formed on the outside of his body and was discovered at 18 weeks of pregnancy. The neurosurgeon performed an 8 hour operation when he was only 38 hours old to place the cord and nerves back in the right spot. Although the nerves and cord was placed back where it was supposed to be, he doesn’t have any feeling or function from mid torso down. He is 100% dependent on his wheelchairs. He has both a manual and a power.
Hydrocephalus is what most people call “water on the brain” too much water causes pressure, so the neurosurgeon places a device that shunts the water on the brain to his stomach where it is reabsorbed. The shunt was placed when he was 1 week old. Evan has had a total of 22 surgeries to date.
Evan doesn’t let his disability get in the way of his ability and is always smiling.
Evan is involved in Drama, Challenger’s baseball, disabled sailing camp, and bowling. He also is involved with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (he was named CMN RI Champion in 2011) and has raised over $5,000 and has been a guest every year on the annual Hasbro Children’s Hospital radiothon telling his story and inspiring many. He is an Honorary member of the Miss RI Organizations and even helped Miss RI and all the contestants clean up Providence. He is such a giving young man and I want to be able to take him to where he needs to go safely.
