About a year and a half ago my world blew up and forever changed me. I was given a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. I was handed a prescription for a "gold standard" drug that has been used for the past 50 years to allow a Parkinson's sufferer to live out their days as comfortable as possible. Nothing has changed in 50 years! I was shattered. Here I am, a dance teacher, with a movement disorder that has no cure and keeps chipping away at your mobility and Independence. Needless to say, I went down a horrible path of despair, depression, and anxiety. It has been a horribly painful road for not only me, but friends and family who know my situation. My biggest problem is that I am told that Parkinson's Disease is different for everyone; it moves in different directions with different symptoms....and none of them are pretty. Yet, PD patients are all treated the same. Something doesn't ring true to me. In doing research, I have also found that many things can cause Parkinson's like symptoms. Heavy Metals, Environmental factors, chemicals in household products, food are among some . There are tests, supplements, and treatments that can investigate, help, and sometimes even resolve issues I am having. Herein lies the problem: Naturopathic and homeopathy is not recognized by most insurance companies. I am having to pay out of pocket for any path outside of pharmaceutical drugs. Drugs are covered and my symptoms are masked....until they stop working or the side effects get too bad. Then another pill with another side effect comes my way. This method feels illogical; What feels right to me is trying to get to the root of what is causing my symptoms. It may be an easy fix.....I would cheer that day.....even a difficult fix as long as I feel I am on a path that speaks to logic.
The problem for me is the expense of the testing, doctor visits, supplements, treatments, and any possible follow-up care. A conservative guess is $15-20,000 dollars. It is very hard for me to put this out there and I know everyone is struggling with something. I understand completely if this is not something you can help with, but I have decided that if I never put my situation out there and keep it hidden, nothing will change. I believe that years of "swallowing things" has partially led to my condition. Maybe this is the first step on a healing path. I thank you for just listening.
