I SURVIVED FROM THE SHOOTING SPREE AT GOLD SPA IN ATLANTA

My name is Eun-Ji Lee, and I am one of the two survivors from the Gold Spa shooting in Atlanta, Georgia.

I was hiding in a little room with one of my colleagues during the shooting, hoping the shooter won't find me. I held my breath and closed my eyes-- I could hear my heart beating faster and louder. It was the most terrifying moment in my entire life. All I could hear from the outside was the popping sounds of a gun. It felt as if I was in a horror movie, but this was real and worse-- no actors, no scripts. I slowly got up and checked outside after an unknown amount of time passed. There I found three of my colleagues, brutally killed. Then I heard someone banging the doors and there was the police asking us to open the door. It was weird because the front and back doors are always left open but soon I realized that the shooter locked the doors so no one can get in.

Eight innocent people died, three of them being my colleagues. I thank God I survived, but the amount of weight I now have on my heart is rather difficult to explain. Ever since March 16th, I have been suffering from severe nightmares and have to leave the lights on at all times. Every morning I wake up sweating heavily, not being able to eat anything. I have lost 15 pounds ever since the shooting happened. Whenever I'm alone, my heart is racing; when I close my eyes, I can hear his footsteps looking for me to kill me. I would like to see a psychiatrist but I currently have no insurance and lost my source of income, while having no family member to rely on. I used to be very active with a positive personality but not anymore, not after witnessing the murder of my colleagues. I'm trying to get over the trauma and get my life back to before, but turns out it's not that simple.

I pray every night hoping that there is someone out there who understands my current situation. I have never expected in my life to be in such a situation like this. This is something that should not happen to anyone and it is utterly unacceptable to commit such hate crimes based on the colors of our skin. Any amount of donation will be greatly appreciated and used as funds for necessities such as bills, psychiatrist counseling, and other basic living expenses. Thank you so much for your concern and generosity, and may God bless you all. Please stay safe.
