Eubie Blake Cultural Center
It was a brisk Saturday morning and Mekai Hines sat close to the piano as choristers arrived at the Eubie Blake Center. The warm-up began, and Mekai was mesmerized by the overwhelmingly rich sounds that filled the fourth floor. At that very moment he envisioned himself as a professional singer, and from then on, the Eubie Blake Center had to be a constant part of his life. Now in his second year of vocal instruction, Mekai credits the Eubie Blake Center with preparing him for school and other performance opportunities.
The Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center, a community based arts center, gives Mekai and others the opportunity to discover, explore and be active participants in the arts. By standing firm in its commitment to offer arts programs through scholarships, free and reduced-fee programs, and Saturday and evening classes and performances, the Center makes the arts accessible to all neighborhood and city-wide residents.
The Center is well-known for it's live performance and gallery spaces in the heart of Baltimore's cultural district. The Center is truly special because it is a place where children and adults alike can experience the arts and are given the chance to develop their gifts.
The Center is dedicated to engaging with the community through the arts, and since public support for community based arts programs has significantly declined, this vision can only be achieved with the support of friends like you.
