Esther’s Stem Cell Transplant

We we have a marvelous update for our family, friends, and neighbors. Your prayers, love and support for our mother, Esther Ortega have provided us with courage to navigate our journey. Our momma, Esther is scheduled for a Stem Cell transplant at UC Davis!

Esther has been extremely brave, vulnerable, unwavering in faith and courageous as she’s navigated her journey. Medical teams at UC Davis, Gene Upshaw Cancer Center and TFH have been remarkable.

On October 28, 2022, Esther was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). AML is a severe cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Immediately after, she was admitted to UC Davis to undergo rigorous chemotherapy.

In late November we were given devastating news;the aggressive chemotherapy failed. The biopsy showed 79% immature cells, a mere 5% less than at onset treatment. Esther was started on a regimen to extend life. Then, severely immune compromised she came home! During this time Gene Upshaw Cancer Center, UC Davis and TFH supported her Leukemia with transfusions, hospital admissions and mental health support.

Our family spent a holiday season in sorrow; reminiscing, tears, grieving, and above all; inundated in love. We prepared for end of life. Mom began arrangements; sifted through prized possessions and memorabilia; called her closest friends.

Then, our miracle came! On January 2nd we heard REMISSION with less than 1% immature cells. There are no words to describe this moment.

We began extensive medical clearances and most importantly the search for a stem cell donor. The best marrow transplant outcomes happen when a patient's HLA and the HLA of a donor closely match. In order to survive, Esther requires a stem cell transplant. Everyone prayed, manifested, negotiated with the cosmos; then a 100% MATCH! Yes, 100%!

Our momma, Esther is scheduled for a Stem Cell transplant at UC Davis in mid March. We are hopeful she will be selected for a clinical trial; and reduce recovery time. The requirements for a stem cell transplant are a 1 month hospital admission; 2 month relocation to Sacramento and a 24/7 caretaker. If all goes as planned, a year from  now she’ll be cured❤️‍

We recognize it is a privilege to care for our momma. We are grateful for your love, prayers, and continued financial support as our family continues to navigate our journey.
