Esteban -Severe Congenital Scoliosis Surgery

Hello. My name is Esteban Colón Rivera, I am 13 years old and live in Puerto Rico. A few months ago, my parents and I received some news. I was diagnosed with Severe Congenital Scoliosis, which requires surgery as soon as possible. Due to my condition, the type of treatment required before my surgery can not be performed in Puerto Rico.

At first, I thought that I would have the surgery here in my country and that it would be a short and simple process. But it is not like that; I will have my surgery in the United States at the Shriners Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. I will be hospitalized for three months (starting in January 2023) and undergo several surgeries. In the hospital, I must always be with one of my parents.

Before the surgeries, I will undergo a 4-week treatment process called Halo Traction. During this process, I will be at the hospital as well. Based on what my doctors have explained, halo traction is usually the first step in correcting scoliosis, kyphosis, and other spinal malformations. Children stay in the hospital the entire time they are in traction, usually three to eight weeks. After halo traction, children typically undergo spinal fusion surgery to stabilize the spine permanently.

Halo traction reduces the risk of damaging the nerves or soft tissues surrounding and supporting the spine during surgery. So the hospital will be my home during that time. Due to this, my parents, my little brother Juan Diego and I will have to move from Puerto Rico to Philadelphia for three months.

This means a tremendous economic challenge for my parents in terms of expenses for medical treatment, housing, transportation, and food, among others, with which we need your support. The total of our expenses for this time exceeds $85,000.

Hola. Me llamo Esteban Colón Rivera, tengo 13 años y vivo en Puerto Rico. Hace unos meses mis padres y yo recibimos una noticia. Fui diagnosticado con, Escoliosis Congénita Severa, lo cual requiere que sea intervenido quirúrgicamente lo antes posible. Debido a mi condición, el tipo de tratamiento requerido, previo a mi cirugía, no se realiza en Puerto Rico.

Al principio pensé que sería operado aquí en mi país y que sería un proceso corto y más sencillo, pero no es así, tendré que ser operado en Estados Unidos, en el Shriners Children’s Hospital en Philadelphia. Estaré hospitalizado durante tres meses (desde enero 2023) y seré intervenido en más de una ocasión. En el hospital debo estar acompañado siempre por uno de mis padres.

Dentro del hospital, me espera un proceso de tratamiento de 4 semanas antes de la cirugía llamado Tracción con Halo. Según lo que mis doctores me han explicado, la tracción con halo es generalmente un primer paso para corregir la escoliosis , la cifosis y otras malformaciones de la columna. Los niños permanecen en el hospital todo el tiempo que están en tracción, generalmente de tres a ocho semanas. Después de la tracción con halo, los niños generalmente se someten a una cirugía de fusión espinal para estabilizar la columna de forma permanente.

La tracción con halo reduce el riesgo de dañar los nervios o los tejidos blandos que rodean y sostienen la columna durante la cirugía. El hospital será mi casa. Es por eso que mis padres, mi hermanito Juan Diego y yo, tendremos que mudarnos de Puerto Rico a Philadelphia, por tres meses.

Será un gran desafío económico para mis padres, en cuanto a gastos de tratamientos médicos, vivienda, transportación, alimentación, entre otros, con los que necesitamos tu apoyo. El total de gastos en los que incurriremos sobrepasa los $85,000.

Mi familia y yo confiamos en un Dios que se hace presente en nuestra necesidad, utilizando personas como tú, que nos apoyen económicamente y con la oración. Al hacerlo serás parte de nuestra travesía familiar y estarás bendiciendo mi vida y la de mi familia. Quiero crecer sano y estar bien; para así cumplir el propósito de Dios para mi vida.
