On January 7th, 2025, the Eaton Fire devastated Altadena, California, destroying over 6,000 homes, including the home of Maia Giordani and her beloved dog, Luke. Maia, 56 years old, had lived in Altadena for 40 years and called her home of 10 years a sanctuary — not only for herself, her son and dog Luke, but also for countless wildlife and her community.
Maia’s home was more than just a house; it was a gathering place for friends and family, a certified habitat for local wildlife, and a safe haven where birds, rabbits, butterflies, and other creatures thrived. Maia’s deep concern now is the impact this destruction has had on the environment. Many of the animals that once lived around her home have lost their habitat, and Maia is determined to revitalize this safe, nurturing space for them again.
She dreams of returning to Altadena, a place she has always loved, and recreating that sanctuary—not just for herself, but for the community she hopes to help revitalize. However, Maia is facing the harsh reality of being displaced, as are so many in her neighborhood. Her 22-year-old son has lost his childhood home, and Maia feels the weight of losing not only a physical space but 56 years of memories and the entirety of her family’s history in Altadena.
Her last gathering, a tradition she cherished, took place on New Year’s Day. It was a time when friends and family gathered around her table to celebrate, but tragically, every single neighbor who sat with her that day also lost their home in the fire. The loss of the community, the memories, and the places that defined their lives has been overwhelming.
Currently, Maia and Luke are in temporary housing, but they need help. Maia is seeking to reclaim her life, both physically and emotionally, in the community she loves. She wants to stay in Altadena, where she has lived for so long, and continue to contribute to the town’s recovery.
How Your Support Can Help:
Maia needs assistance for things that her insurance and FEMA won’t help with. The funds raised will go towards creating a space to replace the memories that were lost.
• Wildlife rehabilitation: As a lover of nature, Maia plans to recreate the wildlife habitat that once surrounded her home and was home to many local animals.
• Support for her dog Luke
• Community rejuvenation: Maia is committed to staying in Altadena and helping revitalize the community. She hopes to create spaces for others who have lost their homes to find comfort and support.
Maia’s story is one of resilience, love for her community, and a determination to stay in Altadena, despite overwhelming loss. Maia needs help to heal with Luke, her community and the environment around her. With your help, Maia and Luke can restart their lives and create a sanctuary once more — for themselves, for their neighbors, and for the wildlife of Altadena.
Every donation, no matter the size, will make a significant difference in Maia’s journey. Thank you for your support during this challenging time. Please consider helping this Altadena Phoenix.
