Hi! Our names are Amelia and Charlotte, we are second-year student midwives currently volunteering at a regional referral hospital in the heart of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This experience has opened our eyes to the strength of the women here, and the urgent need for basic medical supplies that many of us take for granted.

Just days into our placement, we witnessed a baby born in poor condition. The staff rushed to resuscitate, but the only bag-valve mask was broken. This simple, essential piece of equipment could have made all the difference. Unfortunately, moments like this are far too common.

Mothers here are expected to bring their own delivery packs (including cord clamps, cotton wool, gloves, and even soap) which are unaffordable for many. Pain relief is often a luxury, even during procedures such as suturing, post‑cesarean recovery, or manual removal of the placenta. Sanitation supplies like hand soap and sanitiser are diluted to stretch further. Maternal sepsis remains a major cause of death, which is preventable with basic PPE.

We are learning so much, from the resilience of the women, the dedication of the staff, and the spirit of this community. We would now like the opportunity give back to the people who have taught us so much.

We are fundraising to buy vital maternity care supplies while we are still here. Every donation will go directly toward purchasing equipment from trusted medical supply warehouses in Dar es Salaam, which we will personally deliver to the hospital staff.
