Never, in our careers, did we expect this to happen.
We came into this field because we love it, because we’re good at it, and because we knew it was recession-proof. Nobody ever said anything about it being pandemic-proof, though, and we are being hit, hard, by this.
We, as barbers and stylists do not have the ability to work from home in these circumstances. We also don’t collect salaries, being a cash-only business. We pay our own health-insurance, and don’t have PTO or sick time saved up. Some of us have cash socked away, but it is far from enough to cover an entire month’s pay.
We never expected to ask for donations or plead for help in this way, but nobody saw this coming. Even when we saw how bad it got, we never expected to be jobless and income-less.
All of the money donated will be split amongst the barbers at Esquire. It will be spent on essentials like food, heat, and electricity. It won’t benefit upgrades to the barbershop, a class to help us perfect our craft, or to buy new tools to more efficiently service you; It will help us live until this confusing, stressful, and, as each day has shown us so far, ever-extending time without pay.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and hope that we get to see you, sooner rather than later.
