A couple of months ago, my Auntie Saffiya Mohammed Faraj was diagnosed with Non-
Hodgkins Lymphoma/MALT-Lymphoma again. This is a relapse, nine years ago she was treated for the same cancer in Jordan. She is my mother’s cousin and they grew up together, so they are close and have always remained in touch. For family, you already know that Auntie Saffiya lives in Mukalla, Yemen, where she worked at Mukalla City Hospital as the head midwife until recently. With the help of donations back home, Auntie Saffiya and her husband Omar Basawad, managed to fly to Amman Jordan, to go to the King Hussein Cancer Centre in Amman (http://www.khcc.jo/en), where she was previously treated in 2009. Cancer treatment is very expensive, and they are unable to meet all the costs of her treatment there. The Oncologist in Amman has prescribed 4 to 6 sessions of chemotherapy with Rituximab (700mg per session) every 3 weeks, and she has undergone one chemo treatment so far. This single session alone cost them just over US$3,000. This excludes PET scans, lab tests, biopsy, doctor fees, and other hospital costs.
As you may all be aware, Yemen has been in a grip of a devastating civil war since 2015. According to the UN, the fighting has sparked the largest humanitarian crisis in the world https://news.un.org/en/story/2019/02/1032811. The Yemeni Rial, the local currency, has lost more than 80 percent of its value since 2015, which has ground the economy to a halt and forced millions of Yemenis, already desperate, to depend on humanitarian aid and donations. The healthcare system is decimated, nearly half of the country’s hospitals are not working and many medical professionals have not received salaries for a long time. This has left Yemenis like Auntie Saffiya unable to get treatment at home, or without the means to go for treatment outside the country without help.
Without assistance, Auntie Saffiya will not be able to get the lifesaving treatment she requires.
I am creating this fund on behalf of my mother and myself so we can help in her treatment in, Jordan. The funds raised will go towards her treatment, medical tests and accommodation in Amman. The funds raised here will be given to my uncle (Uncle Salim in Ottawa – 1613 [phone redacted]) who will send it to them. He is in touch with them on daily basis and has sent them some money already. I have also put some of her medical report from the Oncologist in the comments section below, for those who would be interested.
We would like to thank everyone for taking the time to read this and for any donations received.
