Support Eshe’s Recovery after Near Fatal Car Accident
Donation protected
On Sunday, May 4th, four days fresh from my Kenya trip, I had a near fatal car accident. I was driving home from dinner with my best friend, Lyntoria and her family. We just had an amazing meal at the sosofed pop-up!
I made it approximately one block from home before the collision! I remember a stop sign, and then a sudden loss of consciousness(a potential diabetic event, doctors say). When I came to, I witnessed my car going straight into a brick pillar. I instantly felt the impact. My car was covered in bricks. I got up, in pain, and slowly yelled for help. I heard someone say ”help is on the way” and I felt reassured. Unfortunately, because I was across the street from the police precinct, the help was the boys in blue. They pried the driver door, and I managed to walk out, despite my completely crashed vehicle.
I was transported to Grady by ambulance, where I was stabilized and placed in the hallways for hours. Lyntoria was able to come back to the ER with me and we contacted my family. My ER nurse thought I was okay enough to be discharged that night, but the CT and MRI scans had a different trajectory. Doctors determined that I fractured my cervical spine(C5-C7)and would require surgery.
Due to the hospital overwhelm, it took a week for me to have surgery, but the surgeon & team successfully repaired my fracture. My family was with me through the entire 10-day hospital stay.
After seeing pictures of my accident, I am relieved that I am still here. I’ve had a lot of heavy moments in the last few months with losing my job, mental exhaustion, and developing contamination ocd. At times I often wished for my demise. This accident was a reminder that there is a life still worth living. My ancestors saved me;seeing myself crash allowed my body to surrender, to relax. My pain and hospital experience woke up a desire to live with aliveness. The support of my family, friends, and community reminded me that care was possible and something to be taught in our most vulnerable moments.I am here!
