Erwin Sowell's Memorial Fund

On March 16th Erwin suffered a seizure and heart attack resulting in severe brain damage that made it necessary to put him on life support at 64 years old. Erwin and his sister Cathy, have had the best brother/sister relationship, a closeness that cannot be compared by many. Erwin lost his Mother at 9 years old and depended on his Father for everything until his Father passed away in 2002. He and Cathy had lived with and cared for their Father who had Alzheimer’s for many years. Cathy and Erwin shared a duplex with their father and continued to live there together next door to each other, after his death. Erwin would literally give the shirt off his back to help people and animals. He rescued many animals over the years and just recently invited people unable to care for themselves, without family, to live with him. For several years he shared his portion of his house with a dear friend of his and Cathy’s, Laura Spratling. He loved those times. He has always had a heart of gold.

In his younger years he played baseball at the Gresham Park ball fields, like so many of us. Both him and his sister Cathy went to Walker High School. He worked for many years at Sears, then Rite-Aid, and was currently on short-term disability from Walmart. He was in chronic pain from degenerative discs in his back however he was a very dedicated employee, never missing a day of work even through the Covid epidemic.

Erwin was a sports FANATIC! He loved his Atlanta Braves, Falcons, Hawks and Georgia Bulldogs. His sense of humor was impeccable! He had a bevy of friends that loved him so very much. His wishes were always to be buried beside his Father.

This is a personal note from Cathy : “ He and I lived on each side of a duplex so we were able to see each other everyday. He was the only family I had left. He is my heartbeat. It is with a heavy heart that I must ask for help to make his wish for a family burial come true. I am on a fixed income and unable to provide the necessary arrangements to bury him beside my Mom, Dad, and our little sister which is what he wanted. Please keep us both in your prayers as we go through these final days. Pray for me to be strong enough to make the decision I am going to have to make in the next few days. Thank you all for any help you can provide. ”
