Meet Mr Erwin Davis. A 93 year old WWII veteran who now dares to dream that he might return to Europe.
I know Mr. Davis as a family friend. He and my father grew up in the same rural community of Pearl, Texas, and were lifelong friends. I have known of Erwin, and met him several times, but it wasn't until this year that I got to know him much better. During our time of conversation he shared that he had earned Two Bronze stars for bravery during combat, and the French government awarded him a medal of the " Legion D Honneur". He continued to share that he wished he could go back to Germany one day, but didn't dare to dream that it could happen at this late stage of his life.
Erwin and his twin brother Ervin made up a bazooka team that was attached to the 3rd Army, 89th Div,354 Reg, Co B. They pushed through the midsection of Germany, crossing the Rhine near Koblenz, then moving north of Frankfurt, heading to the Czechoslovakian border. Along the way, they liberated a Nazi concentration camp, and neutralized a V-2 buzz bomb factory that had been operating underground in some abandoned salt mines.
Now we're attempting to raise money for a two week trip including France, Luxembourg, and Germany. We've already raised $4000 , but we have budgeted out $10000. The money will be used to buy airline tickets , rental car and lodging for both of us. We plan on leaving for Paris on June 1, therefore our fundraising window is rather small , and your timely response is necessary.
There are three places that Erwin would love to visit. He wants to pay respect to the fallen heroes at the US cemetary in Luxembourg. Of utmost importance would be the areas that his company crossed the Moselle and Rhine rivers under combat, and lastly the German town that was his last bivouac before the German surrender.
Your support would mean so much to us. We hope to set up software, and blogs so that you can feel and hear Erwin's feelings, thoughts and sentiments during his journey. Time and again Erwin has humbly remarked that he can't believe that people care enough for him to live beyond his imagination. I for one am so thankful for gentlemen like Erwin, who saw it as their duty to go so far, and fight against tyranny. I will be forever moved to know that many of you feel the same way.
Words will not be able to describe our gratefulness for your generosity. We are quite aware that this is monumental, and by our own means we could not make this happen. We hope that you will be a part of the Erwin experience.
Kind Regards,
John Moseley
