Ernie's Heart and Kidney Transplant Journey

Donation protected
In 2015, Ernie Morrison's life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation at the age of 45. The challenges began to pile up as he faced a trans-ischemic attack, akin to a stroke, in January 2016. Despite moments of improvement in 2018, Ernie's health took a severe downturn in 2019, leading to his job loss and exhausting his medical leave funds.

Struggling to cover medical and living expenses, Ernie depleted his 401K by 2020. A pacemaker installation in 2019 brought temporary relief, but it was later replaced with a defibrillator pacemaker in 2020. Despite this, Ernie couldn't return to work, prompting him to file for full medical retirement in 2021, which thankfully saved his home from foreclosure.

The rollercoaster of Ernie's health continued, and in March 2023, he faced a critical situation, with 20 pounds of water drained from his body. Despite a brief improvement, by August 2023, Ernie's health reached a dire state. His defibrillator shocked his heart multiple times without him even feeling it, leading to a near-fatal incident on August 21st. Lifelited to OHSU in Portland, Oregon, Ernie's full kidney failure was discovered, a direct result of his heart failure.

Ernie was placed on the transplant list in October 2023. His heart, stopping more than OK, required urgent intervention. An auger-like pump was installed to assist his heart, moving him to the top of the donor list. On November 3rd, 2023, Ernie received a life-changing offer – a new heart and kidney from the same donor. The transplant surgeries took place on November 5th and 6th at OHSU.

Now, Ernie faces a challenging recovery journey. Released from intensive care on November 19th, 2023, he remains tethered to his bed due to three months of constant dialysis causing muscle atrophy. The process of relearning how to walk is ahead, but Ernie is hopeful. He dreams of being home for Christmas, albeit in the apartment near OHSU.

This fundraiser aims to support Ernie and his family during this critical time. Funds raised will contribute to medical bills, daily living expenses, and the necessary resources for Ernie's rehabilitation. With your help, Ernie can focus on regaining his strength and returning to a semblance of normalcy. Your generosity can make a significant impact on Ernie's journey toward recovery and renewal. Let's come together to make Ernie's Christmas wish of being home a reality.
