As many of you know, I was offered a Visiting Professorship at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs for the 2019-20 year. The opportunity to work with the some of the brightest collegiate minds is an inspiring honor. I accepted the position and am currently here. It has been everything I could have imagined and more. I work with not only the most talented students but also in a department that is friendly, cohesive, student-oriented and practices STEM pedagogy and assessment to continually improve. The contrast has renewed my soul and drive to teach.
I knew I had to accept this opportunity from the outpouring of support I received from family and friends, even though we only hit 2/3 of the funding goal. I was able to get my contract between my home institution and USAFA renegotiated when a calculation error was discovered, so I thought I was in good shape.
Now, my home institution has become the problem. I found out after I got here that no one had even begun to process the paperwork to pay my monthly salary this year. And while three different offices all argued about whose job it was, the calendar moved on. August 1 came and went and no paycheck. The contract still has not been processed, and my partial check from last year is not enough to pay the bills, even with draining the remainder of my remaining GoFundMe campaign funds.
SO, again, I reach out to my amazing family and friends to do what my home institution cannot seem to do, SUPPORT me in serving USAFA fully and without distraction. Today is also my 54th birthday, so even if your own personal affairs don't allow for your support, please leave me an encouraging message today.
My thanks and love to you all.
