Hello, I am Katie's Aunt and Godmother. All of us were devastated to get the news about Erik. We wanted a way to help this loving and beautiful family continue to be strong during Erik's recovery.
On Thursday, January 7th the world stopped spinning for the Hagen family. Erik was found unconscious in the back of his work truck. He was resuscitated by the sheriff on site, taken by ambulance to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery for a frontal brain aneurysm. The surgery was successful and his doctors are pleased with his progress so far.
Erik will be in ICU for at least a week, followed by another month-long hospital stay. There are a lot of unknowns and potential setbacks ahead.
Katie & Erik have been married for 22 years and been through a lot of life together. It felt like they were just settling into routine as a family of 5 in the New Year when this happened. Many of you know them through Collin's baseball & hockey, or Chloe's wide social network. Their youngest, Cody, just celebrated his 1st birthday this fall. The Hagens are a big part of our family, the Mound-Westonka community, their Watertown neighborhood and life-long friends & colleagues to many.
Erik's journey is miraculous, but life will not return to normal for months to come. The 3 kids aren't able to go see their dad and only 1 visitor is allowed to be with Erik per day. They are balancing school, Cody's daycare and the hospital right now. Katie is a teacher in the Mound-Westonka district, and is already out of sick time (thanks, Covid). This will be a marathon for them all and we hope to lessen burden of expenses for daycare, gas, household items and growing medical bills.
The Hagens need our help to focus on what's important and any donation allows them to focus on recovery.
His progress is hopeful. Prayers are working!
