Eric's DBS Journey

My brother-in-law, Eric Hammergren has been battling Parkinson's Disease for over 8 years. It has been difficult to witness how this disease has progressed. It has made his every day life very difficult to manage due to his medications only sporadically working. I have marveled at his strength and perseverance to fight the progression of this debilitating disease. On Tuesday (5/10/22) Eric will be undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery at UNC Chapel Hill, NC. We are excited and hopeful for what the possible outcome will mean for his day to day life. Right now Eric needs help from his friends and family. This journey is going to be difficult on many levels.

The surgery and recovery will take time and care. Eric will be off work for an undetermined amount of time. My sister, Jill, will be by his side every step of the way. Her work hours will be reduced as well as she assists and cares for Eric. Their financial situation will be heavily impacted due to reduced income, medical bills and the length of recovery expected.
