Hi, my name is Herbert Ramos, on January 5th my younger brother Erick Ramos (19 years old) was in a serious car accident caused by another driver that almost cost him his life as he was the only one that sustained injuries. He fractured multiple parts of his body including his jaw & some ribs, however the worst injury was to his head. The right side of his skull was totally crushed into pieces and his brain began to swell. Of course with any cranial injury there are a number of extremely serious risks. Within minutes of the ambulance arriving to the hospital the surgeons told us that they needed to operate immediately and totally remove the whole right section of his skull that was ruined so that the brain would have space to safely swell and then go down to normal size after some time. They told us that the procedure had no promises and that they didn’t know what would happen, basically that he could still die or end up with serious brain damage, but the alternative was death, so my parents said ok to the surgery. After the surgery he spent a week in coma and during that time we had no idea what was going to happen. When he finally woke up he showed severe signs of mental trauma and disability, he couldn’t move parts of his body and basically had what seemed like the mind of a lost child, we were all very scared. Eventually after being moved to a rehabilitation hospital and receiving care there, he was able to regain himself fully, physically and mentally. We didn’t know how, but it happened. After some months they attempted a surgery to replace the missing part of the skull with an artificial piece, however it somehow got infected and 2 months later he had to have a third surgery to remove it and clean out the infection which could have reached his brain and been fatal. This has all happened in the course of the past 10 months, additionally they found 2 aneurisms on his brain which we will have to monitor, but now on October 18th he’s going have his 4th and (hopefully) last surgery to replace the missing piece of skull again so he can go back to living a normal life. As you can imagine after all the surgeries, flying in specialized surgeons from other states, being in multiple hospitals for long periods of time, and constant checkups we have an incredible amount of medical bills now, and insurance can only cover so much. Not only that but the car (my car) was totaled, he lost his job, we’ve all spent tons of money during the hospital stays, and taken times off work/school that have made the financial situation even worse. This has been an extremely difficult experience for the whole family and everyone involved but especially for him both physically and psychologically/emotionally. Thank you everyone for your love, support, and prayers.
