Erica was diagnosed with chiari malformation + (which consists of cysts in her spinal cord and compression of her cerebellum) in August, 2019. On June 25, 2020 Erica had brain surgery to relieve the pressure on her brain and spinal cord. They removed bone from her skull (occiput) and C1 and C2 vertebrae, then mesh was implanted and some brain matter was removed (cerebellum). Unfortunately the surgery was not as successful as originally hoped and Erica continues to experience a number of symptoms of her condition including numbness of her feet and calves, constant excruciating nerve pain and weakness in her left arm, tunnel vision/double vision/kaleidoscope vision, severe difficulty sleeping, constant migraines, and dizziness/ lack of balance, among other things. These symptoms have led to falls and an inability to work, drive, read, and do many of the activities she loves.
Living in Jasper has challenged Erica’s access to resources resulting in numerous trips to Edmonton and surrounding areas to seek medical care. The funds raised through this campaign will go to support Erica in accessing much needed medical equipment (including specialized eye glasses and a c-pap machine), trips to Edmonton for medical appointments, and copay for medication. Erica and her partner, Olivia, are also experiencing a loss of income due to Erica’s inability to work and Olivia’s time away from work for Erica’s medical appointments and care. Erica's symptoms are unlikely to change in the near future and so we are anticipating similar expenses over the next two years as she has amassed over the last 17 months.
While this condition has complicated life for Erica, she is extremely resilient and is doing everything in her power to improve her quality of life (both mentally and physically). Erica is a dedicated auntie, friend, partner, girl guide staff, outdoor educator, storyteller, hockey player, youth mentor, a beloved goofball, and so much more. The last two years have emphasized Erica’s positive spirit and ability to support friends and/or family in spite of her own hardships.
Emma and Rebecca are two of Erica's good friends. We are eager for this campaign to help Erica in accessing the resources she needs to improve her quality of life, hopefully see improvement of her symptoms, and be able to return to gainful employment and sport in the coming months and years.
Even the smallest donation is helpful and greatly appreciated.
